Museum opened in 1877 in the former printing house of Christophe Plantin, Europe's most prolific publisher in the late 16th century, continued by his son-in-law Jan Moretus. The first museum ever inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list, in 2005, it preserves the world's two oldest surviving printing presses, two Gutenberg Bibles and a library of some 25,000 titles.
