In the hamlet of Houjarray, some forty kilometres west of Paris, a long, low country house served as Jean Monnet's home from the post-war years until the end of his life. It was in these deliberately modest surroundings, far from ministerial offices, that he received a good many of the political leaders of the day and that several of the projects leading to European integration took shape. The site is now run by the European Parliament. The visitor route runs from the ground floor to the first floor of the house, continues through the conference room and the park, and covers both Monnet's personal career and the stages of the European integration he helped design. The rooms have kept their domestic scale, which gives the visit a very different feel from an institutional museum. Practical points: admission is free, the audio guide is included, and you should allow roughly 45 minutes to an hour. The house opens every day of the year except 1 January and 24, 25 and 31 December, closing later at weekends during the warmer months. The park, where Monnet liked to walk, is accessible all year.
