The Musée de Viarmes occupies the top floor of the town hall, on Place Pierre Salvi, and spreads roughly 400 m² of display across some fifteen rooms. It is a museum of village memory: each room recreates an early-20th-century setting — the classroom, the bistro, the grocer's, the cobbler's workshop, the barber's shop, work in the fields — with the period furniture and objects that go with it, gathered and staged by the Association Pierre Salvi. What sets the place apart is its scent trail: smells are attached to several of the recreated spaces, from the grocer's to the cobbler's bench by way of the classroom and the barber's shop, so as to engage the visitor's sensory memory as much as their eye. It is an unusual device in a museum of this size, and it changes the experience of a period interior quite radically. Admission is free, but visits are by appointment only. You must write to the association at least a week in advance, giving the date, the time you want and the number of people. There is no walk-in access: this is not a museum you drop into in passing, and it is better to know that before making the trip.
