The Palais de Tokyo occupies the west wing of the building raised for the 1937 international exhibition, a long colonnaded mass of concrete and stone overlooking the Seine. Since 2002 it has housed Europe's largest contemporary art centre: some 22,000 square metres with no permanent collection at all, given over entirely to temporary exhibitions and commissions from living artists. The building keeps its deliberate building-site aesthetic - raw floors, demountable partitions, exposed services - which gives artists an unusual freedom to take over the space. The programme mixes major solo shows, carte blanche invitations to emerging artists, performances, concerts and debates; there is also a well-stocked bookshop, several restaurants and a mediation team on the floor. Admission normally costs 13 EUR, but the Palais opens free of charge every Thursday evening from 7pm to midnight during the summer, with no booking. It closes on Tuesdays and otherwise opens from noon to 10pm, with a late night until midnight every Thursday all year round.
