Standing on the plateau of Athis-Mons, next door to the Simone-de-Beauvoir media library, the Maison de banlieue et de l'architecture describes itself as an interpretation centre for the urban environment, suburban heritage and architecture. Rather than a museum with a permanent collection, it is a place of research and outreach: one large thematic exhibition a year, put together in-house, backed by a "Cahier" published in a series that has now reached its thirty-third issue, and extended through urban walks, guided visits and projects run with local schools. The subjects owe less to the picture postcard than to the social and material history of the territory: work in the suburbs, the place of the child, the large housing estates, the uses of the Seine, food supply, sport. The exhibition running from 16 April to 12 December 2026, "Matières à bâtir. Matériaux et vies bâtisseuses, des sols aux architectures franciliennes", follows the millstone grit of the suburban houses, the clay of the first workers' estates and the sand of post-war concrete in order to connect what is dug out of the ground with what is built on top of it. Admission is free, with no booking for individuals and appointments for groups and school parties. Watch the hours, which are very narrow: the exhibition room opens only on Wednesdays from 14:00 to 18:00, plus a few Saturdays announced case by case, and it takes a long summer break — from 16 July to 18 September 2026 inclusive, with a reopening announced for Saturday 19 September 2026. The documentation centre is consulted by appointment and the office answers Monday to Friday. The exhibition room is on the ground floor and the entrance is wheelchair-accessible, but the toilets are not.
