A former Benedictine abbey built over the tomb of Saint Germain, bishop of Auxerre in the 5th century, whose Carolingian crypts preserve 9th-century frescoes among the oldest in France. The monastic buildings house an archaeology museum spanning prehistory to the Middle Ages.
