Founded in 1844, the museum has been housed since 1985 in the former archbishops' palace, adjoining Saint-Étienne Cathedral. It holds the cathedral treasury, including the 12th-century ivory Sainte Châsse reliquary, important Gallo-Roman collections and the Villethierry hoard, comprising more than eight hundred pieces of jewellery.
