The museum occupies the Hôtel de la Princerie, residence of the princier, the diocese's highest-ranking dignitary after the bishop, rebuilt in Renaissance style in 1525 by the Musson brothers. Badly damaged during the First World War, the mansion was bought by the city in 1926, which in 1932 installed there the collections assembled since 1822.
