Born in 1828 from the donation of the Montpellier painter François-Xavier Fabre, the museum occupies the Hôtel de Massilian and former buildings of the Jesuit college. Reopened in 2007 after four years of work, it displays more than two thousand paintings, from Bonjour Monsieur Courbet to rooms devoted to Pierre Soulages.
