Heir to the museum founded in 1918 by François Carnot, it was inaugurated in its present form in 1989 around the Hôtel de Pontevès, a mansion of 1778, and a stretch of medieval ramparts. Its roughly fifty thousand objects trace the history of perfume from antiquity to the present day, including raw materials, stills, bottles, posters and toiletry items.
