Built by the architect Andreï Svetchine on land acquired by Fernand Léger shortly before his death, the museum opened on 13 May 1960 at the initiative of Nadia Léger and Georges Bauquier. Its façade bears a vast mosaic after a cartoon by the painter; given to the state in 1967, it holds around 400 works.
