Charleroi's fine arts museum, whose collection dates back to an 1889 bequest, moved in 2022 into the renovated former Defeld gendarmerie barracks; its roughly 4,000 works of 19th- and 20th-century Belgian and Walloon art include eight paintings by René Magritte alongside works by James Ensor and Pierre Paulus.
