Fortress built from 1225 by Enguerrand III de Coucy, whose 54-metre cylindrical keep, the tallest in Europe, embodied the lord of Coucy's motto: 'King I am not, nor prince, nor duke, nor count either. I am the lord of Coucy.' It was blown up in 1917 by the retreating German army.
