Built from 1855 to 1867 by the architect Henri Parent, it is the first building in France designed specifically to house a fine art museum. Opened in 1869 with the collections of the Société des Antiquaires de Picardie, it brings together archaeology, old master painting, and the great mural decorations by Puvis de Chavannes.
