Created by the Chaptal decree of 1801, it ranks among the richest museums in France. The present building, erected by the architect Louis Sauvageot from 1877, spreads paintings, sculptures and graphic art across some sixty rooms, from Caravaggio's Flagellation of Christ to the Impressionists.
