Erected in 6 BC on the Via Julia Augusta to celebrate Augustus's subjugation of some fifty Alpine tribes, the Trophy of the Alps originally stood 50 metres tall, with a 38-metre square base topped by a colonnaded rotunda of 24 columns and a conical roof bearing the emperor's statue. Turned into a watchtower in the Middle Ages, the monument was restored in the 1930s with funding from American philanthropist Edward Tuck and reopened in 1934.
