Site of Volsinii Novi, the Roman city founded on the shore of Lake Bolsena after the Etruscan capital Volsinii (modern Orvieto) was destroyed by the consul Marcus Fulvius Flaccus in 264 BCE. Excavated from 1946 to 1986, the area preserves the Roman street grid, forum and an Augustan-era basilica, while temple remains at the nearby Campo della Fiera have been identified with the federal Etruscan sanctuary of Fanum Voltumnae.
