A medieval square fortress on the Serrone hill in Gambatesa, Molise, crowned with Guelph battlements and corner towers; it passed in the 15th century to Andrea di Capua, whose family — later dukes of Termoli, not to be confused with the city of Capua — gave the castle its name and converted it into a Renaissance palace in the 16th century, adding a rusticated portal and a loggia. In 1550 Vincenzo I di Capua commissioned the painter Donato da Copertino to fresco several rooms with landscapes, grotesques, and mythological scenes; restored, the castle is now state-owned and displays the frescoes as a picture gallery.
