Museum opened in 1997 in Altamura, presenting the ancient settlement of the High Murgia plateau through prehistoric, archaic, classical-Hellenistic and medieval sections. It is closely tied to the nearby La Croce site and to the discovery of the Altamura Man, a fossilised Neanderthal skeleton found in a local cave.
