State archaeology museum on the ground floor of the Norman-Swabian castle of Gioia del Colle, a stronghold of 9th-century Byzantine origin enlarged by the Norman lord Riccardo Siniscalco in the 12th century and given its present form by Frederick II around 1230. Founded in 1959 and raised to national status in 1977, the museum presents Peucetian and Iron Age material from excavations at Monte Sannace and Santo Mola conducted between 1940 and 1953.
