Roman amphitheatre at Puteoli (modern Pozzuoli), built in the second half of the 1st century AD at the colony's own expense, probably under Vespasian and inaugurated under Titus. Measuring about 150 by 116 metres with room for some 40,000 spectators, it was the third-largest in the Roman world after the Colosseum and the amphitheatre of Capua; its well-preserved underground level held the machinery for raising animal cages into the arena. It is part of the Phlegraean Fields Archaeological Park.
