The founding institution of the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium, established in 1801 under Napoleon and expanded after Belgian independence in 1830. Its galleries on Rue de la Régence in Brussels hold Flemish and European painting from the 15th to 18th centuries, including major works by Rogier van der Weyden, Pieter Bruegel the Elder and Rubens.
