Benedictine abbey founded in 948 near Arles, which grew into one of the wealthiest in Provence, as its Notre-Dame abbey church (1130-1182), Romanesque cloister, Sainte-Croix chapel and troglodyte Saint-Pierre hermitage still attest. Abandoned after the Revolution, it inspired numerous drawings by Van Gogh in 1888.
