Founded in 1821 in the Maison Carrée, the museum moved in 1907 into a building by the Nîmes-born architect Max Raphel, refitted by Jean-Michel Wilmotte in 1987. It holds around 3,800 works from the 14th to the 19th century, arranged around a large Roman mosaic depicting the marriage of Admetus.
