Cistercian abbey founded in 1132 as a daughter house of Clairvaux, in the Escaut valley; its abbey church ranked among the largest Cistercian churches in Europe before being dismantled after the Revolution. What survives is the monks' building from the late 12th century and its chapter house with Gothic vaulting.
