Sanctuary founded around 708 by Bishop Aubert of Avranches, which became a Benedictine abbey in 966, built atop a rocky islet exposed to the bay's powerful tides. The Merveille, a Gothic ensemble of stacked halls built between 1211 and 1228, was added to the 11th-century Romanesque church; a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1979, the abbey has hosted the Monastic Fraternities of Jerusalem since 2001.
