Fortified city of Gallo-Roman origin, ringed by a double wall nearly 3 kilometres long with 52 towers, which surrendered to Simon de Montfort during the Albigensian Crusade in 1209. Restored from the 1850s onward by Eugène Viollet-le-Duc, it has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1997.
