Set in the former présidial (royal court), whose present façade was completed in 1900, the museum was founded in 1836 by enthusiasts of art and archaeology. Its collections, from the 16th to the 20th century, include paintings by Chardin, Corot and Courbet, and a substantial body of work by the Carcassonne-born painter Jacques Gamelin.
