Fortress built on Mont Andaon under King Jean II the Good and completed under Charles V by architect Jean de Loubières, who also built the Palais des Papes in Avignon, to assert French royal power across the Rhône from papal Avignon. Its 750-metre wall, twin-towered gatehouse and Tour des Masques still dominate Villeneuve-lès-Avignon, alongside the neighbouring Benedictine abbey.
