A former 14th-century cardinal's residence that became the home of the archbishops of Avignon, the Petit Palais has housed a museum of medieval and early Renaissance painting and sculpture since 1976. Its 326 Italian primitives, drawn mainly from the Campana collection, form the richest such group in France after that of the Louvre.
