Museum born from the bequest made in 1810 by the Avignon physician and collector Esprit Calvet, authorised by imperial decree the following year. Since 1833 it has occupied the Hôtel de Villeneuve-Martignan, built in the 18th century to designs by Jean-Baptiste Franque, and displays archaeology, 15th- to 20th-century painting, sculpture and decorative arts.
