Housed in the Hôtel de Montgrand, a mansion built in 1694, acquired and then bequeathed to the city by the sculptor Jules Cantini in 1916. Opened in 1936, it holds one of the leading French collections of modern art from 1900 to 1980, rich in Surrealist paintings linked to the movement's stay in Marseille in 1940-1941.
