A museum set at the heart of the Citadel of Belfort, a stronghold remodelled first by Vauban and then by Haxo. It traces the settlement of the land between the Vosges and the Jura from prehistory to the Middle Ages, the growth of the town, and the siege of 1870–71 led by Colonel Denfert-Rochereau, and devotes six rooms to the sculptor Frédéric-Auguste Bartholdi.
