The museum occupies the château of Montbéliard, residence of the principality's princes, whose origins go back to the 13th century. Born in 1843, it presents the history of the château and the principality, the former apartments of the princesses of Württemberg, and a fine art museum, along with the Georges-Cuvier archaeology and natural history collections.
