Founded in 1864 by the industrialist Frédéric Engel-Dollfus and the Société Industrielle de Mulhouse, the museum occupies the Villa Steinbach, a residence built in 1788 for a manufacturer, and has been devoted to fine art since 1964. Its collections range from the late Middle Ages to contemporary art, with a substantial body of work by Jean-Jacques Henner.
