Set in the former échevinage (aldermen's hall) of Saintes, whose octagonal belfry dates from the 15th century and main building from the 18th, the museum was born of Count Lemercier's bequest in 1864 and has occupied these premises since 1978. It presents 19th-century paintings, the Saintonge and Bordeaux schools, and Sèvres porcelain.
