The museum occupies the Hôtel de Cheusses, an early 17th-century mansion that became the headquarters of the naval command and then of the naval stores administration after the arsenal was founded in 1666. Established in 1930 as the naval museum, it holds ship models, ornamental sculpture and navigational instruments.
