Founded by decree in 1787 and opened in 1799, it is one of the oldest museums in France; it occupies the Palace of the Dukes and Estates of Burgundy, remodelled in the 17th century to plans by Jules Hardouin-Mansart. The Salle des Gardes there houses the tombs of the dukes of Burgundy.
