Founded in 1864 on the initiative of the Société des Amis des Arts de Pau, the museum has occupied a building constructed for it by the architect Jacques Ruillier since 1931. Its collections cover the European schools from the 16th to the 20th century and are arranged around Edgar Degas's A Cotton Office in New Orleans.
