A Neo-Romanesque palace built from 1862 to 1898 for the Nantes collector Thomas Dobrée, the museum opened in 1899 after his collections were bequeathed to the department. It holds around 135,000 works: medieval manuscripts, Egyptian antiquities brought back by Frédéric Cailliaud, and the reliquary of the heart of Anne of Brittany.
