Housed since 1982 in the Hôtel Fleuriau, an 18th-century mansion built for a family of La Rochelle shipowners, the museum is devoted to relations between La Rochelle and the Americas. The first French museum to address a port's slave-trading past, it holds nearly 2,200 works related to the slave trade and the Caribbean colonies.
