Three medieval towers guard the entrance to La Rochelle's old harbour: the 14th-century Tour Saint-Nicolas and Tour de la Chaîne, once linked by a chain that closed off the port. The Tour de la Lanterne, begun in the late 12th century, later served as a prison for privateers and then for the military; more than 600 graffiti carved by inmates survive inside.
