Housed in the citadel of Port-Louis, a fortification commanding the entrance to the Lorient roadstead, the museum opened there in 1962 before being entirely redesigned. It now presents the history of sea rescue and the trade routes to the Far East, with porcelain recovered from shipwrecks.
