Opened on 21 December 1974 on the site of the former Abbaye Sainte-Croix, in a vast concrete and glass building by Jean Monge, recognised as a notable work of contemporary architecture. Its collections range from prehistory to contemporary art, including the Minerva of Poitiers and seven works by Camille Claudel.
