Museum founded in 1865 by the city under the direction of Édouard Filhol, in the former premises of the Discalced Carmelites, occupied as early as 1796 by the naturalist Picot de Lapeyrouse. The first in the world to open a prehistory gallery, it holds more than two and a half million pieces in the Jardin des Plantes.
