Museum founded in 1792 from works confiscated from émigrés and religious institutions, opened to the public in 1809 and then housed in 1892 in a palace built for it on Place de la République. Its collections excel in Flemish and Dutch painting, 19th-century French painting, and fifteen relief maps of towns fortified by Vauban.
