Benedictine abbey near Codigoro, first documented in 874, with its Romanesque basilica consecrated in 1026 and a 48-metre bell tower completed in 1063 by the architect Deusdedit. The monk Guido d'Arezzo developed the basis of modern musical notation here in the early 11th century; the basilica preserves 14th-century Bolognese-school frescoes and an opus sectile marble floor, while the adjoining Museo Pomposiano, in the former monks' dormitory, displays marble fragments, ceramics, and liturgical objects from the complex.
