Basilica built between 532 and 536 on the orders of Bishop Ursicinus and financed by the banker Julianus Argentarius, dedicated to Saint Apollinaris, Ravenna's first bishop, and consecrated in 549 by Archbishop Maximian. The three-aisled basilica, with columns of Proconnesian marble and a 9th-century cylindrical bell tower, preserves in its apse a 6th-century mosaic of the Transfiguration showing Sant'Apollinare among twelve lambs beneath a jewelled cross; it is part of the UNESCO World Heritage site 'Early Christian Monuments of Ravenna', inscribed in 1996.
