Originally built as a mausoleum for the Emperor Hadrian, begun around 135 AD and completed under Antoninus Pius in 139, the monument was incorporated into Rome's Aurelian Walls as a fortress in 403 and later became a papal stronghold linked to the Vatican by a covered passage, the Passetto di Borgo. It takes its name from a vision of the Archangel Michael attributed to Pope Gregory I, and today houses a museum with Renaissance papal apartments frescoed by artists including Pinturicchio and Perin del Vaga, alongside the medieval fortifications and former prison cells.
