A star-shaped fortress on Naples' Vomero hill, begun in 1329 under King Robert of Anjou on the site of a tenth-century church dedicated to Sant'Erasmo, and largely rebuilt with its distinctive six-pointed plan in the 1530s–40s under the Spanish viceroy Pedro de Toledo. Long used as a military prison — its inmates included the philosopher Tommaso Campanella — it has been open as a museum since 1988 and now houses the permanent exhibition 'Novecento a Napoli' (1910–1980) alongside temporary shows.
